Konichiwa! I will be traveling to Japan as a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar to study its educational system and culture from October 1-19, 2006. Feel free to post questions or comments. I will use this as a way to communicate with family, friends, colleagues, and students. I'll try to reply to as many as I can, when I can. The clock below shows you what time it is in Japan....Remember, Japan is 12 hours AHEAD of the United States! They are living in the future!

Laundry - quite the experience!

We had to do laundry tonight. I packed very few clothes - so it was time to get them ready for next week. We walked down to the local Laundromat, and what an experience that was! Imagine walking in to a Laundromat that has only Japanese writing on the walls. None of the directions were in English. Not to mention the fact that there was not any place in the machine to put soap in!!!!! We stood there for quite a while and looked at the pictures. See if you can figure it out:

Well, what you do is put all of your clothes in, shut the door, choose which setting you want, put in the money - and it goes. It automatically adds the soap and the big surprise was that the machine would wash and dry your clothes in the same machine. I did not have to move my clothes from the washer to the dryer. It was pretty amazing!
