Konichiwa! I will be traveling to Japan as a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar to study its educational system and culture from October 1-19, 2006. Feel free to post questions or comments. I will use this as a way to communicate with family, friends, colleagues, and students. I'll try to reply to as many as I can, when I can. The clock below shows you what time it is in Japan....Remember, Japan is 12 hours AHEAD of the United States! They are living in the future!

I made it!

Well, I am officially in Japan. But here is the big question.....

It is now 9:00 p.m. in Japan while it is 6:50 a.m. in Fort Worth. If I left San Francisco (which is two hours behind Fort Worth) at 2:15 p.m., and it was a 10 and a half hour trip. What time did I get to Japan?

Needless to say, I am going to bed after no sleep! Here are some pictures of the plane, the trip, and some of the first sights in Japan. The airport was gorgeous - it was all lit up! And yes - I saw my first toilet with buttons and a heated seat!

By the way - tell Mrs. Gillen not to worry about the fifth grade test. That is the one thing I left out!!!!!

Hope all is well with everyone!

in thailand the toilets at the nice hotels all had a spray nozzle attached, like the one by our ktichen sink- it's what they use instead of toilet paper. in the truck stops the toilets consisted of a porcelain hole in the floor, usually with a place to put your feet, with a small plastic bowl and a water trough off to the side. you were supposed to use the bowl to pour water on yourself, and then pour more water into the bowl to flush away everything.
i was adventurous enough to try the spray nozzle in the hotels (pleasant, actually) but always smuggled paper napkins into the market and rest stop bathrooms. too western, i guess.
